We will always remember Ben for his smile. He would make you laugh, even when you were feeling down. He always greeted us with a hug when we got home from work, and made the stresses of the day go away. Whenever we said “ I love you Ben”, he said “I love you more”, then we’d discuss if it was possible to measure and decide that it was probably equal.

Ben said that Friday was his favourite day of the week, because he got to spend the day at school with his friends and stay up late with us. He had some great friends at St James’s and we’ll never forget the sleepovers, where no-one got much sleep!

Ben was always up for a challenge, whether it was a new computer game, or walking up a mountain, he was determined to succeed. He was really looking forward to Manor Adventure and starting at Ridgewood. He fitted a wider variety of experiences into his life than many people do in several times longer. He loved to read and write stories, but hated tidying his room.

The thing that made us most proud of Ben was his caring nature, he loved to look after his dog Poppy, and help his granddad. He liked looking after his little brother and sister at weekends. He loved being a buddy and took his role seriously. He persuaded Tracy to teach him to cook, so he could bring me breakfast in bed on my birthday. Miss Penn, his Headteacher, always says that when you’re 90 or 100, no-one will ask about your SATS results, but the life you led and the person you were. We could all learn from Ben, he may not have made it to 100, but he will be remembered as the boy who liked to make you smile. No-one knows how long their life will be, so take a leaf out of Ben’s book, make the most of your opportunities and make sure each day to tell the people that love you, that you love them too.

On the 7th of February, I collected Ben from school because he didn't feel well, on the 8th, the snow day, he was sick and I phoned an out of hours doctor who said it sounded like an upset tummy, call your GP in the morning. I made the appointment, but when I tried to wake him for it I couldn't. The inquest verdict was natural causes. Ben had Lymphocytic Myocarditis. A virus had affected his heart, which in the majority of cases would not have been fatal.
